Training your Mind and Body

When you are fishing you are doing a whole bunch of things. Your mind is focused on doing all of the right things to make sure when the moment comes and that fish hits you are ready. As soon as you feel or see that strike your mind instantly releases endorphins from all of the adrenaline running through your body in anticipation of landing that fish. Not only is your mind incredibly active but for some anglers getting the fish to bite is the easy part but landing it is a different story entirely. Take fishing for amberjacks for example. They are one of the hardest fighting fish pound for pound in the ocean. One of the most common ways that they are fished for is through vertical jigging. Now when you are dropping a ten ounce piece of metal down 200+ ft and jigging all the way up that is a workout within itself! Not to mention when you hook the fish you have to deal with it getting cut off in the wreck, getting sharked or simply just pulling hook. Fishing requires you to train and exercise your body and your mind!

Spending Time Outdoors

Fishing like any activity done outside can be one of the most relaxing activities their is. Now don't get me wrong if you are commercial or tournament angler fishing cannot always be the most zen thing in the world. But in general for the every day offshore, inshore, freshwater angler it can be an escape from everything that is going on in the world. Spending long hours focused on a specific task is akin to meditation an activity linked to lowered blood pressure.

I know for me for sure when I'm out patrolling the banks searching for bass or cruising in a kayak I am in the ultimate state of peace. Most times I am often ok going home empty handed. Sure I have to deal with the grief from my father and brother about the fact that I run a fishing apparel company and didn't catch anything but hey, sometimes its just how it goes.

Mastering Variety of Skills

Fishing puts you out in the wilderness and calls on you to master a variety of different skills. The more involved you get in the sport the more you will learn. There is so much to learn when it comes to fishing and its different for EVERY different type of fishing. Bass anglers learn different skills than people who fish for Giant Trevally. There are some things that every angler does have to learn such as casting, casting ACCURATELY (key word accurately), picking out which lures to use when and where, getting the right action on your baits whether it be a jig or a topwater. There are a whole bunch of things to learn and fishing really can provide the focus when it comes to learning new things.

Fishing Requires Physical Activity!

Fishing is often viewed as the old grandpa sitting in his chair with a bobber out waiting for a bite. Now obviously this view is very far off from reality and often shared by people who quite frankly know nothing about fishing. No matter what king of fishing you are doing it requires some form of physical activity. Take kayak fishing for example. It does not matter what kind of fishing you do in the kayak the activity is for the most part the same. When you are in a kayak you are paddling one of two ways. Either with a paddle or peddles. Either way when you are paddling or peddling you are building core strength because your body simultaneously is making sure it keeps you and the kayak stable and balanced. Increasing core strength and flexibility help with offsetting back pain. Offshore fishing is one of the more physically taxing modes of fishing for a variety of reasons the main one being the fish are bigger and stronger. The muscle groups are all the same though, core and upper body. When done safely and correctly fishing can be a great way to exercise without even feeling like you are!

A Life Long Passion

Fishing no matter when you take it up becomes a passion fast. The sport is full of setting personal goals and attaining those goals. It has often been linked with improving self-esteem. With it being a sport that you can enjoy at any age so many young and old anglers get to enjoy the passion together.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the essential vitamins that humans need to survive! When you are outside sunlight hits  the cholesterol in your skin cells converting it to energy for vitamin synthesis to occur. Long story short sunlight equals vitamin D. Vitamin D helps your body regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that improve immune system function and help defend against disease. The best source of vitamin D is a day on the water!

Calorie Burning?

Yes! Fishing does burn calories. Now it does depend on what kind of fishing that you are doing but on average while fishing you burn 200 calories an hour. Now of course the offshore fisherman and the deep jiggers are going to burn more calories than the crappie fisherman but it is still exercise. Whether its that 15 minute walk to the spot, kayaking around the pond or lake, casting a 4 ounce spoon for ours on end, you are burning calories! So don't feel bad when you drink a beer while you are out there!

Conclusion

In conclusion, fishing DOES have health benefits! Sure they may not be as effective as doing crossfit or going for a ten mile run but when you are fishing it hardly ever feels like you are actually exercising. You are so caught up in what you are doing you don't even realize it! So go out there and grab a pole and wet a line!

  • I loved learning that fishing can help train your body and your mind. My husband and I want to find a new hobby that will be good for us. We’ll have to look into finding a fishing charter to get us started. http://coldbloodedfishing.com/

  • It’s cool that you point out that fishing is a great way to spend time outdoors. I want my kids to spend time outside before summer is over, so I’m considering renting a boat that we can take fishing. I’m going to search for a good business in the area that has fishing boats for rent.

  • I like that you said fishing lets you escape your problems for a while and unwind outdoors, soaking it Vitamin D. My husband is depressed because of a failed business venture that wiped out his savings. Perhaps he should try fishing since it’s akin to mediation, as you said, and would be helpful for his mental health. Thanks. http://konacharterboat.com/
